The new year of 2003 is upon us, and Cape Macintosh has undergone a significant site redesign to get ready for it!
Our last major graphical overhaul occured with the release of Apple's Mac OS X, when we shelved our original "hexachrome, red, and gold" look, and adopted an "aquafied" appearance to celebrate the era of X. Now that we are well into the 21st century, we thought another overhaul was in order to give the site an even jazzier and maybe even slightly jarring appearance. The first item we changed was the line that divides sections of pages. This was originally a six-color stripe in Apple hex sequence, then was made an elongated aqua button. Now, we're adopting for it the graphic motif used in the AppleSIG SpacePort BBS logos since the late 80s, for the data beam radiating out of the computer icon's monitor. This is an eight-bit wide data path. In honor of the idea of laser beams passing thorugh fiber optic cables (inspired by a recent reconnection with an old friend who is working in the optical networking industry), we make the beam 50% red. Also from the AppleSIG SpacePort BBSes logos, we use the Apple // side profile computer icon, in gold. This honors the heritage of our original computing platform. This computer icon has been used for several years in my personal letterhead stationery. Now it is put to use for the logo of Cape Macintosh. The space shuttle icon also is borrowed from my stationery. It has its origins in a set of MacPaint Space Shuttle clip art documents featured on NASA SpaceLink in the late '80s. The text inscription "CAPE MACINTOSH" in the logo remains as always in Microgamma bold extended type, and we carry over the aqua blue color from the previous incarnation. The Aqua is also used for active link text throughout the site. The tag line used in the original Cape Macintosh logo was "The Frontiers of Space And Flight on the Apple Mac". We don't see this focus for the site changing any time soon, so we are now making the commitment that it is "Forever". Which also nicely ties into the motto of the Boeing Company, which is "Forever New Frontiers". Amen, brothers! In honor of the limitless final frontiers, we paint the tagline in Crilee text, familiar to viewers of "Star Trek - The Next Generation". To visually set the tagline apart from the remainder of the logo, it is 60% green. This same green color is now used throughout the site as the main text color, evoking memories of the days of green screen monochrome monitors. Finally, we give ourselves more working space on our pages by adopting a minimum recommended screen size of 800 pixels wide, as opposed to 640. The red laser fiber optic data beam is therefore 750 pixels wide. And so Cape Macintosh is jazzed up and ready to fly into 2003 and beyond, honoring the heritage of its past origins, while presenting a bold new face to head off into tomorrow. Egads, how utterly pretentious!!!! :) -- Ken, December 31, 2002 |
